In June 1815 Rothschild received a message from the Battle of Waterloo by carrier pigeon reading “Napoleon Lost”. He promptly sold all of his stocks and bonds, starting a rumour that England had lost the war. Just before the real news reached the market he bought them all back again, and more, at fire sale prices. He made a fortune.
